Everyone Is Able, Differently: Where uNickorns Really Started
This didn't start as a business plan. It started at home, watching one boy build a path nobody had handed him.
Most companies have a founding story that gets polished for the website. This one is just true, so we're telling it plainly.
We are a family that has spent more than ten years running a school built on a simple idea: language is a tool, not a goal. The real work was always helping people find their voice, not correcting their grammar.
We are also a homeschooling family. Our sons learn at home, on their own timeline, building real projects and asking enormous questions nobody scheduled time for. We've watched them become capable years before a system would have told us they were ready.
And we are the parents of a boy who was born without a hand. He plays electric guitar. Nobody handed him a standard technique, a standard path, or a standard anything, so he built his own way of doing it, and it works.
Watching him taught us the idea everything else grew from: everyone is able, differently.
What that actually means
It means ability doesn't look the same in every person, and it was never supposed to. It means difference is information, not a defect to correct before real learning can start. It means a young person who doesn't fit the standard shape of "good student" isn't behind, they just need a shape that was actually built for them.
We call this Differentability. It's not a slogan we came up with for a pitch deck. It's the question we ask about everything we build: does this help a young person become more capable as themselves, or does it just ask them to become more like everyone else?
Why this became uNickorns
We didn't set out to build a movement. We set out to stop waiting for education to change and start building the alternative our own kids needed. uNickorns is what happened when we realised other families needed the same thing, and other teenagers, ones we'll never meet in person, were quietly wondering if something was wrong with them for not fitting the mould either.
Nothing is wrong with them. The mould was just never built wide enough.
That's the whole premise. Everyone is able. Differently. We're just trying to build the kind of learning that actually behaves like that's true.
